Bath is a unique city - a fact recognised by UNESCO who has designated the City as a World Heritage Site. Originally built by the Romans to take advantage of the hot springs, the Georgians turned Bath into one of the most fashionable spas of the 18th Century. It has been favoured by many great artists, writers and musicians, who have gained inspiration from living here. These include Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, Handel, Gainsborough and Sir Walter Scott. Bath is a popular venue for filmmakers seeking to recapture the authentic Georgian and Regency atmosphere. The films 'Remains of the Day', 'The House of Elliot' and 'Persuasion' are three examples of many that have used Bath as a location.

The combination of Georgian architecture and the mellow honey-coloured stone has created a streetscape of crescents and terraces for which Bath is renowned. There are many stunning examples of Georgian architectural excellence to experience, including The Royal Crescent, the Roman Baths and Pump Room, the Circus, and Pulteney Bridge. As well as these renowned examples, there are innumerable buildings of significant architectural interest around every corner and cobbled alleyway.

Old and new do not always live comfortably beside each other, but the Bath Spa Project, due for completion in 2003, will reconnect Bath with its origins within a modern Spa complex to rival the finest in Europe. The naturally occurring hot spring water on which the City was founded over 2000 years ago will become the focus of a state-of-the-art spa facility, offering bathing, water-therapy and specialist treatments.

Bath has a wealth of interest in addition to its Georgian architecture. It has museums, art galleries, the Theatre Royal and Bath Abbey. There are literally dozens of attractions to enjoy all year round. It is home to the Bath International Music Festival, which has been established for over 50 years. The festival is normally held during the last two weeks of June. Please contact us for details. There is a vast array of restaurants and cafes to suit all culinary tastes, and the quality of the shopping is highly regarded by many visitors to the city.

Bath's attractions are not limited to its own built environment. It is surrounded by stunning countryside, and is encircled by the Cotswold Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It is a perfect base from which to explore the superb landscape, as well as other historic centres such as Wells and Glastonbury.
